Canine Control
If your hound dog is hassling you, it may be time to talk to someone who listens! I've just finalised the identity for Jen Oliver - a specialist in canine communication. This identity sneakily merges a pair of dogs with a pair of ears (look closely at the dog's inside shape), and there's a collage of identify-your-favourite-dog silhouettes on the reverse of the card. Plus some nice tactile embossing.

The Kiosk Opens
Fab clients Jaqii and Stefano asked me to develop the identity for their new café right on Floreat Beach: The Kiosk. An FJ woody panel van was the inspiration for the new logo (supported by a bunch of illustrative scribbles), reflecting the retro orgins and the sand-on-your-feet feel of their new place...

From the Vault 1959
What designer can resist a vintage, boomerang-shaped promo? For P&O cruises 'boomerang' excursions to England - I guess so-named as you would finally arrive in England to ghastly weather and boomerang straight back to Oz! In 4 spot colours, it's an ingenious piece of advertising.

From the Vault
This amazing booklet was released to accompany South Seas Adventure 1958, fifth in a series of Cinerama travelogues, narrated by Orson Welles. It features great pics of hip-swivelling girls, exotic cocktail-drinking, warrior spear-waving, and a guide to hosting your own Backyard Luau "the romance of the South Sea Islands is beautifully and simply expressed in its foods". And here's a great tip: "make punch cups by sawing coconuts in half"! Great retro type and illustration on the cover, produced in 3 vibrant colours. Found at a collector's fair for $7 (it's right there on the cover!).

SHAG Weekend
Any committed retro-loving, cocktail-drinking guy or gal would be a devotée of the talented über-hip artist Josh Agle, aka SHAG, and his world of stylish minxes and debonair dudes. There's a fab opportunity right now to see Josh's paintings and rare prints in the Birds & the Beasts Exhibition at the Breadbox Gallery in Northbridge, brought to Perth by the great people at Outré Gallery. Shag himself appeared on Friday night at the swinging cocktail party, on the first leg of his 3-city Australian tour. And then obligingly signed books on Saturday despite the torrential rain.
Josh and Tracy (modelling appropriate bird hat!):
After meeting Josh on Friday night at the cocktail party, we had the pleasure of showing him around our own slice of mid-century mod here in Floreat. We swung by a few of Floreat's preserved 50s dwellings, and meandered along our gorgeous coastline to lunch at Soda Café at Trigg beach - enjoying a sampling of our local brew, Little Creatures Pale Ale. Josh's vivid sartorial style dispelled the greyness of the cloudy day, as he sported a fantastic Hawaiian shirt and green plaid jacket - swiiinging!! - and yes, he was wearing pants!
Here's Martin, Paul & Josh modelling Hawaiian Shirt Collection c.1960:
Paul, Tracy & Josh: hey, the sun's out!
Josh kindly signed a couple of our Shag books back at the Floreat pad and later visited Hula Bula Bar with the Outré crew. He might be a jet-setter, but he's unaffectedly cool and an out-and-out great guy. See his show while you can! Closes April 13.

Back in the Groove
Anyone still wondering why things have been quiet here, may not be aware that I had an enforced break last year due to a nasty pelvic injury. It was the Year of Living Dysfunctionally, but I'm glad to say that I'm back in the design chair - albeit for stopwatch-timed periods - and there are some exciting jobs in development right now. More soon!
For those friends, colleagues and clients who persevered with me, thanks for your patience!
